Why I Didn't Stitch This Weekend!!!

What an exciting weekend we have had here!!  We climbed to the top of Pigeon House Mountain yesterday with three of our four children and two partners!  It was a beautiful day and the scenery was magnificent from the top!   We then enjoyed a fabulous lunch together celebrating David's birthday!  This is at the bottom of the track ... Nadia and Sam, Chelsea, Ash and Tim, me and David.

At the top .... Ash, Sam, Nadia, Tim, me, Chelsea and David!  Cold .... but a warm cup of tea was just what we needed!

Then Tim took Ash away to this beautiful hilltop cottage overlooking the ocean ...... and proposed to her!   And she said yes!!

Then they invited us up to the cottage with Tim's parents and we shared a fantastic family celebration last night (way too much champagne consumed)!!    A huge weekend and we have just gained one fantastic son-in-law to be!!   Couldn't be happier!!   Congratulations Ash and Tim!! xxxx

Knitted Thimble Purse & Singer Sewing Machine

This is a cute little beaded and knitted thimble purse which we will be knitting up in our Needlework group in a few weeks time!   A quick knit .... but lots of fun!!

And what better backdrop than my Grandma's beautiful old Singer sewing machine!   And thankyou to everyone who sent me the link to find out what year it was made - 1926!!!   After locating the serial number I went to this site here and matched up the serial number with the relevant year!   So this family heirloom is 86 years old (and she still works like a charm)!   Apparently my Grandma was given this as a wedding gift - what a beautiful present!

I love the beautiful old style of writing on the top and you can see around the "S" where the pin scratches are .... obviously from many hours of sewing with Grandma!

Just went out the back door to get the clothes off the clothesline and was greeted by 3 kangaroos nibbling the grass!!

Looks like there is a baby joey in this pouch - lots of movement - but only a tiny ear sticking out of the pouch!   Baking up a bit of a storm this afternoon as we will have a full house of kids and partners for the weekend to celebrate David's birthday .... we have a bush walk planned so hoping the weather is good!

Grandma's Sewing Machine

The sun was shining through the window yesterday afternoon (ever so briefly) and provided great light for photographing my Grandma's old treddle sewing machine.  I was fortunate to receive this beautiful old machine when Grandma passed away many years ago.   It sits inside my front door greeting visitors!

I had the machine restored a couple of years ago and it really is such a beautiful piece!   I must do some research into the actual age of the machine!   Any clues anyone??

The carving on the wooden drawers is just gorgeous!

It is of course one of the original old "Singer" treddle sewing machines and it still works!

I think Grandma would be pretty happy with where it is and how it looks right now!

Anzac Biscuits

Mmmmmm ....... morning tea .........Anzac biscuits fresh out of the oven and a cappucino followed by a phone call from No. 2 son serving overseas ....... Mum's happy!!  (and no ... I didn't eat them all!!)

A gorgeous photo of my amazing father-in-law, Frank, during the parade in Sydney .... sent by his very proud granddaughters!

And a special thankyou ............

ANZAC DAY 2012

Today we are celebrating Anzac Day -   the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey during World War 1.  The landing occurred on 25th April 1915.   The bravery of all military personnel who participated in this campaign, and the lives of those who died in all military actions, are remembered on the 25th day of April every year!    In Australia, we celebrate in a number of ways .... attending a Dawn Service, cheering on veterans in the Anzac Day March, making Anzac Biscuits, playing two-up, and remembering all our service men and women wherever they may be!      My father-in-law Frank served in New Guinea in World War II and he will be marching with his battalion in Sydney cheered on by family and friends.   It's fair to say that on Anzac Day, at 90 years of age, he seems to be 20 again!

Our thoughts and prayers will be with our troops serving overseas ..... our youngest son is amongst them ..... we look forward to his return in the coming months!

And they will be feasting on Anzac Biscuits (because I sent heaps over last week) and I know that they arrived yesterday!! yay!!

Photo of Anzac Biscuits

My favourite Anzac Biscuit Recipe .... 1 cup plain flour, 1 cup rolled oats, 1 cup brown sugar, half a cup coconut, 125g butter, 2 tablespoons golden syrup, 1 tablespoon water, half a teaspoon bicarbonate of soda.
Sift the flour into a bowl and add sugar, rolled oats and coconut.   Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the golden syrup and water.  Stir in bicarbonate of soda into the liquid mixture.  Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and mix.  Place small walnut sized balls of mixture onto greased trays and bake at 175 degrees Celsius for about 15 to 20 minutes.  Biscuits harden when cooled.   YUM!!

Above all ...... we will remember them ...........

LEST WE FORGET ..........

Fernhill Block 1 completed

I have enjoyed stitching this first block in the "Fernhill" quilt by Lynette Anderson!

It looks even better when the little handpainted bluebird button is attached!

Cute button!!

Snapped this naughty little puppy having a rest on my cream coloured day bed (with Ash and Tim) on the weekend !!  Cream does not look that great with chocolate brown hair on it!!

One puppy playing inside .... not sitting under a tree in the rain!!

And put them together with the rest and add the side borders for May and I'm on a roll!!   I might just get the May blocks ready for stitching this afternoon .... this quilt is addictive!!

Glimpses of the Stitching Day

Here are some glimpses of more of the beautiful pieces and the Hobbysew display we had at "Stitching on the Lake" in Canberra last Saturday!    Najelle bought along a collection of must haves from Hobbysew at Belconnen (and yes ... a couple of those must haves ... I just had to have!!) .... this is part of her lovely display!

Some beautiful fabrics ... I wanted the whole basket!

This gorgeous Lynette Anderson design of Noah's Ark was beautifully stitched (by Sylvia I think)!!

And another sample of Leanne Beasley's gorgeous stitching pocket!

And another of my favourites ... Leanne Beasley's little Needles and Pins sewing bag!

Doreen had made this very cute and practical little sewing bag (using the same bag I had used for Sylvia's birthday gift - see previous post) and displaying her love of hexagons!   Just gorgeous!

And the back of the case with the pocket covered in lots of hexagons ... I love it!

And what would a stitching day have been without treats?   Way too many of these consumed!! We did have a great day!!  Thanks to all the ladies who attended, stitched, shared, ate and above all, made new friendships ... after all .... that's what it's all about!!

Sylvia's Sewing Bag

Now that I have given the gift I can share what I made for Sylvia for her birthday!   From this book ......

And with some of these beautiful fabrics ....

What should have looked like this little sewing bag in the book ....

Looked like this ....... I'm pretty happy with the end result!!  As Sylvia isn't really a cat person, I took the cat out and added another hollyhock flower and I used blanket stitch applique method rather than needle turn!   Oh ... and I added her name .... just in case she should lose it!

And I sewed strips of Lynette Anderson's lovely fabrics together for the back pocket rather than making lots of little hexagons (time ran out for that)!!     This is a fun project from this lovely new book of Lynette Andersons ..... now on to something else!!   But I will definitely make one for me too!

Stitching on the Lake Show and Tell

Today is an unpacking and tidying up day - I have cleaned out my wardrobe and now tidying up the sewing room!   I have the house to myself and all is good!!   Just going to share some inspiration from the ladies at the Stitching Days ... it is always nice to see projects finished off from previous Stitching Days and some lovely new creations also!   This was a canvas work creation just waiting to be sewn together ... and a lovely pincushion too!

Denise had finished off her lovely stitchery from last year and made it into a gorgeous cushion with some lovely Nancy Halvorsen fabrics!

Sharon had made this beautiful needle roll for her very lucky friend Jenny!   The stitching is beautiful Sharon!

And Sharon had also made this gorgeous stitching roll for Jenny as well - now we all want to be her friend!

And inside the sewing roll were Jenny's beautiful stitcheries ... waiting to be made into a lovely quilt!

Some of Denise's lovely Christmas decorations from last year finished off and ready to hang!

And this is Denise's version of the lovely bag from Anni Downs new book "Some Kind of Wonderful" - it looks lovely with the buttons sewn onto it also!

And inside the bag are some more little treasures .... a cute pincushion and needlecase ... there was also a large scissor holder and thread bag!

And another lovely finish from last year from Anne ... her gorgeous stitching bag!   Lots of inspiration there to finish off those lovely projects!  Well done ladies and thanks for sharing all your beautiful work with us all!
